Acids
Acids in the chemical industry
Acids are among the most important chemicals in industrial production. They are a key raw material and intermediate product in many industries, from metal processing, fertilizer and plastics production to pharmaceuticals, food processing, and water treatment.
The most commonly used industrial acids include:
- Sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) – the most widely produced acid in the world, used in fertilizer production, oil refining, batteries, and metallurgy.
- Hydrochloric acid (HCl) – used for cleaning metals, in the food industry, pharmaceuticals, and in the production of PVC.
- Nitric acid (HNO₃) – important for the production of fertilizers, explosives, and organic compounds.
- Phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) – used in agriculture, food production, and detergent manufacturing.
- Organic acids (e.g., acetic, citric, formic) are used in food production, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and the textile industry.
The modern chemical industry emphasizes safe handling, acid recycling, clean production, and environmentally friendly waste processing. In many operations, acids are an essential part of technological processes, and their proper use affects the efficiency and quality of the final products.
